Lori's M.I.A. Sons of Anarchy has her!

Hey everybody,
Kami lent me her seasons of SOA. I am gone. LOL. I thought since I am obviously spending my free time being glued to the show I should at least review them...or something. I will start with Season 1 and move on from there.

Season 1
Since I am like what, 4 or 5 seasons behind this will probably be boring for all you SOA freaks out there. My thoughts:
I really liked the first few episodes but didn't feel really drawn in. I thought they lacked some grit. My mom watches those true biker stories...the ones about how crazy the Hells Angels used to be. Anyway. It wasn't until midway through the season that I got hooked. Obviously this..................

is a huge draw. Yum. But it takes more than a pretty face, and kickin body to hook me. I loved the grime and blood of the final few episodes and Hellboy rocks as Clay.

Bloggers Love Bloggers Tour and Sign Up!

So the other day I was chit chatting with my friend Ren of a little bit of RnR. We were throwing back ideas of blog swapping and world domination. Anyway I said, wouldn't it be cool if we did a....wait for it....blog tour of blogs. After a short discussion we both decided that neither of us were organized enough to pull it off. Enter Tamara Beard. (actually I harassed her). This was last night. Tamara has already got the whole thing planned out. Please come share our love for each other. I've also created a page for it so that you won't have to dig through all of the rest of the posts for it.

 Synopsis from Goodreads

Review:

WHOO! This book was heads and shoulders above Feathermore (and I had enjoyed that one, too, so it tells you how much I loved this one)! I love being able to see an author grow, in such a short period of time. The book is well paced, the characters are dynamic, and there is a touch of sophistication to this book that was lacking in the first.
Jade is going through a lot, after what happened throughout Feathermore. What I love most about this is that her reactions are completely realistic. I can completely relate with her reasoning and the motivation for her actions.
The pace is a slowed down a little in the beginning, but this allows for phenomenal character development. Even though Claire and Nate take a back seat, I still felt like I got to know them a little better. And because Jade was now handling a lot more without her duo of friends, she grew into a strong, female lead.
And then there's Blake. I had felt him drawing me in, in the first book, and now he has completely captured my heart! He's funny, sexy, and just a little bit sarcastic. Where has he been all my life?!
And now for my favourite part. This book is dark. And I'm not talking about white, with a little gray around the edges. I'm talking black. I love what Jade is struggling with, and how Lucy Swing has managed to paint a believable struggle between good and evil.

Simply. Awesome.

I wonder how long I'll have to wait for Forevermore...

Synopsis from Goodreads

Review:
I encourage anyone who is planning on reading this to avoid the synopsis (and since I posted it right above my review, it's probably already too late, right?). It's misleading and gives hints to the plot. I don't think I'm giving anything way, though, to say that this book is about angels. I've had bad luck in the past with angel books, so I dug into this one with a sense of trepidation. Lucy Swing, however, did a good job at winning me over.

Authors, Blogger and Readers against Bullying.

Bullying is a huge word that is being thrown around the book world these days. Authors and reviewers are being accused of being cyber bullies (and sometimes they are). I think we all tend to forget that a huge amount of us were/are bullied in real life. We are the misfits, the people that don't fit in. We find solace in books, reading and writing them. The Sparring Sisters have started this wonderful campaign. Authors, bloggers, and bookie's all are joining together to take a stand. How cool is that.

My bullying story isn't really that big. I am overweight and have been my whole life. I am poor and have been my whole life. Of course I got made fun of in school. Of course, my self confidence sucked which just made things worse. Here's the thing about being made fun of; it can have several effects on a person. It can make someone work harder to fit in. Or it can just tear you down til you just don't care about yourself anymore. The  second is what happened to me. Not that I normally put a lot of effort into my looks, even now. I just didn't care. I was accused of being a lesbian, of having sex with animals. I was ignored and treated like I didn't exist. I remember when I got my ACT scores back (I got a 28 on my one and only try. That's a pretty high score) and my guidance counselor was such a meanie about it too. He was all like we were surprised you did this good. LOL. I missed no less than 40-60 days a year and maintained a 3.6 gpa. Yeah, I think I got something going on in my head.

I was lucky. I wasn't treated as badly as some of you at school. And honestly, what they dished out was small potatoes to what I got from my older sister. I love the girl but good gosh was she a bully when we were growing up. I'm not going to go into specifics but she literally made my life a living hell. Anyway, long story short. Yes, life moves on. Yes, it gets better as you get older. But for the love of all that is good. I beg parents to teach their children respect for all things. No matter how different people deserve to be treated like human beings. It starts at home. It really does.

I love you all.

Q: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre? When I am not reading YA, PNR, Horror, or UF. I read smut. No joke. I guess it's now one of my USUAL genre'sbecause I now have a blog devoted to it too. Infectious Kink. Obviously being a horror fan I like anything to do with DARK/TABOO Erotica. So my favorites are some really messed up books. Captive in the Dark by CJ Roberts and Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas just to name a few.

Cover Reveal: Inception

“It’s nice to formally meet you, Teal. I’m Gabrielle . . . but you already know that.”

“Of course. I did create you, after all,” I respond with a smile full of pride I think only an author can understand when sitting across from a character they birthed. Especially when that creation of fiction led to a birth of a different kind in my own life.

This interview between author and character had not been planned. It came up suddenly when Gabrielle decided she wanted to know how she came to be, and thought the future readers of her story would also want to know. At first I wasn't sure about the idea, but now, as the Angel of Karma stands in front of me, I am glad for the opportunity.

As we settle in our chairs, my desk separating us, I realize it‘s hard to dissect the expression of the angel sitting across from me. Nothing is readable in her eyes or demeanor. It makes me wonder what is going on in her mind, though not knowing and having the interview told through my point of view is something I agreed to when Gabrielle asked to do this.

I've been a blogger for 6 months...some reflections.

What this means for you? Well an awesome giveaway of course: GO ENTER!

*Once again watch out...my foul mouth has been let loose!
I've seen quite a few instances of blogger burn out. More and more bloggers are putting out calls for new reviewers. We all joke about how far behind we are, or how many books we have stacked up to read.  Every book blogger knows what I mean when I say it's fun. But it's also stressful as hell, a pain in the ass, costly, time consuming and hard.

You would think it wouldn't be that. You are saying to yourself...whatever, I post reviews on Goodreads all the time it's not hard. Yeah, I thought that too. Had I known how much work it takes to even get 130 followers I might have just stayed on Goodreads too. LOL just kidding. I'm an attention whore.

DWW on Thursday.

Desperatly Wanting Wednesday, hosted by Parajunkee's View

OMG Ya'll I forgot to do my DWW yesterday. So slacker-iffic. Is that a word? Should there be a dash there? You know, I really don't give a shiz. Deal with it. YO!
Check out Breaking the Spine for the original meme and check out Parajunkee to join the fun.

This week we are supposed to be talking about the book that we want a T-shirt for.
Well the book I want a t-shirt made for isn't even out. No blurb has been made and there is no cover for it.
But I really, really need a t-shirt and just sway period from Rhiannon Frater's upcoming Tor book Dead Spots. It's going to be epic.

Review: Ruby Blue by Julie Cassar

Title: Ruby Blue
Author: Julie Cassar
Genre: YA/PN with some minor Romance
Source: Author provided review copy
Star Rating: 4 ****
Blurb :Meet Ruby. She’s your average (somewhat dorky) ice-cream eating, garden-loving teenager, who is constantly being annoyed by her little brother, is best friends with possibly the only Goth kid in town and, oh yeah…she sees fairies. After Nick Martino (possibly the hottest guy she’s ever known) finally asks her out, she can barely manage a two-word sentence when a bizarre incident strikes their lakeside town.Stumbling bare-foot through some interesting dates, will she ever find love? And what does Ruby do when more strange events continue to occur? Will she keep her gift of Fairy Sight a secret? As an ancient myth unfolds and new mystic fairy tales come to life, Ruby and her menagerie of friends tackle some extraordinary circumstances with her very ordinary abilities in this modern day fairy tale. See what legends come to life in “Ruby Blue,” a young adult fantasy fiction novel and the first installment of the Ruby Blue series.

Let's get to the nitty gritty, shall we? This was a good book. I like Ruby. I like the story line. I love that it is very firmly a YA novel. I could, without a doubt, hand this book to my 12 year old niece and feel no guilt. I am 28 (29 on Sunday) years old. I enjoyed this story, but I think that a younger audience would LOVE this story. It is perfect for them. It's got  hot boys, romance, mystery, fae and dragons. It teaches love and equality. Jeremy, Ruby's bff is a young gay man. He is comfortable with himself and Ms. Cassar was comfortable putting him out there. He is a genuine human being and not some character that pop culture tells us gay men/boys should be. Kudos for that. There is sexual innuendo but nothing inappropriate for today's teens. Ms. Cassar wove a wonderful story that was easy to follow. My only complaint about the writing itself would be, that it tended to be telling me and not showing me things (and this happened very rarely) and occasionally the characters descriptions would be repeated. If you are a fan of YA you know that this is a common occurrence. I have no idea why Stephanie Meyer decided that she needed to constantly tell us what Edward and Bella looked like...but she did. This was no were near as annoying as that was.
WARNING RANT about the wanky-ness of today's youth COMING!!!
*except Heaven, she's awesome!
This book is timeless. I feel like she could have rewound the clock 60 years and Ruby and gang would be right at home. I love that about books. As a matter of fact I feel more comfortable picturing Ruby and Nick in '50's garb and poodle skirts. Umm James Dean, Young Marlon Brando (yum). I had a hard time connecting the teens in this world with the modern day teens I see everyday. The teens I encounter are a bunch of entitled asshats. Ruby and her gang have a fair amount of snark, but they keep it clean. I know that Ms. Cassar did this to make the book readable by a younger and broader audience. You should hear some of the things I hear the teenagers around me talking about. None of them are this innocent, none of them are this respectful and very few of them are as open minded as these teens. I respect that Ms. Cassar is setting a good example for kids. She is saying you can be badass and slay dragons, make out with hot guys, and have fun without being a total wanker.
Overall I recommend this book to moms who want to buy their younger teen a book appropriate for them. It still has risque things but it's not in your face. I also recommend it to older readers who are tired of reading adult subject matter in YA books.
*I know I like books with adult subject matter in YA books. But I am an adult. I know the difference between romance and stalkerish behavior. I've already lived through my crazy years and can now look back at them fondly and say...wow, Lori, that was dumb as shit. All I am saying is that is nice to have a book I can hand to my niece without worrying about getting a phone call from her mom asking me why she is writing intense make out scenes in her journal....featuring some of the more popular YA book stars. Do you see what I am saying? I'm not knocking either style of book. They are what they are. I'm just relieved that I can give her a break from all the chaos of the life that she is about to enter. The hormones, the cliques, the parties. The rejection from the hot guy. She's not there yet. But she will be soon.

**Sigh this was more of a rant than an actual review. So let me summarize my feelings on this book. It's a good contemp book with timeless qualities. It has supernatural elements, it has hot boys and smart kick ass girls. It has action, it has adventure and it can easily be read by adults and children as young as 12. Overall, a great and solid. 3.5-4 star book.

Taking on the Dead Blog Tour!!!

BB Book Tours

Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed.

She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It's the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it's not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever.

Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles.

In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is emotional as much as it is horrifyingly gripping.

Q: What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness…

I have two books actually. Annie Walls Taking on the Dead. It's a zombie book, and there is a scene in it where a zombie is eating carnival fish. It's so vivid and gory. Very good stuff.
Ilsa J. Blick's ASHES and SHADOWS (ok that's three). Ugh...so graphic and scary and smart! I loved it.
