Lori's Thoughts:
In trying to keep this review spoiler free I will not recap any of the happenings and instead jump straight into "review mode".

It's here at last. The end of Death. But does death ever really end? I'm not sure. The character growth is the biggest thing that happens in this book. They all grow up. Except maybe Jonesy, and I am unsure if he will ever lose that spark/snark that makes him, well, Jonesy. This is new adult. There is sex, there is cussing and even a small "drug" reference.
As always I love it when Ms. Blodgett goes teen with her big amazing writers voice.
Even the raw unedited form of this book flowed like a full edited book. The book does jump around in time and there are a few pov changes but everything still flows beautifully. There are hard knocks throughout the book and I may have sobbed at one point.

I can't say enough about this book, but I fear that I will say too much. However, I will say that this was a wonderful ending to the Death saga.

Now everyone join me in voicing your love of Gramps and the need for a Gramps back in the day Novella.
Oh and more Clyde.

Review: Preservation

Rating: 4 stars ****
Source: Reviewer Purchase
Buy this book: Preservation (Preservation, #1)

Blurb: An Amazon bestselling contemporary romance from the author of the paranormal romance series, The Resistance Trilogy
Fear is sabotage’s sweetest weapon.
Kate has no time for meaningless romantic charades, and definitely no time for hot college professors who are full of themselves and smitten with her. Constantly battling eviction notices, tuition she can’t afford, and a sick, dependent mother, the last thing she needs is to be distracted with someone else’s complicated baggage.
When she stumbles into Ryan Campbell’s creative writing class, he is only “Mr. Campbell” to her, until Ryan finds himself captivated by her writing and she is forced to face their mutual attraction. His cocky know-it-all syndrome is enough to send her running in the other direction, and his posse of female admirers and playboy reputation are enough to squander any odds in her favor.
But underneath Ryan’s abrasive facade is something to behold, and she can’t stay away for long. Ryan and Kate must decide who they’re willing to become and fight against their former selves if they want to make things work. That’s if academia, vicious vixens, old skeletons, and their own mastery at self-destruction don’t pummel their efforts first.

Lori's Review:
Emotionally scared and distant people finding each other and love. Yes, we've all read this story before. What makes Preservation stand out is Wade's writing. While, other contemp romances come off feeling like an author plugged characters into a time honored formula Wade, did something unique.

Review: Disarming (Reign of Blood 2) by Alexia Purdy

Rating: 4.5 Stars
Source: ARC/Beta copy provided by the author
Blurb: The world has changed. One must adapt to survive or hold on to the crumbling shards of humanity.
April continues to hold her fragile world together, but the ties that hold her family together are quickly unraveling. Rumors of a massive human underground settlement draw her to the shadows of the city once more in search of other survivors more like her, even with the hybrid vampires opposing her every move.
The darkness hides secrets along with the continued threat the Feral Vampires create, but a greater evil hides within the city. Something tells April that the humans will be less than welcoming of her, and that's if she can find them before the Vampires do. Joining sides with the enemy might be the only choice she has left.

Buy NOW!! Disarming (Reign of Blood #2)

Lori's Review:

Ok so this review is really a 4.5 stars. I, of course, loved it. It was a thrill ride. We get to see April fighting her feelings for Rye, and trying to take care of her brother and mother after their time with the bad vampires.
We meet a few new characters in this book and I have to say. I am a fan. Including Elijah. Who calls the rabid's my favorite word....oh man. I squeed like a 12 year old when I read the word zompire in this book. The plot definitely thickens as April finds out that there is more to the world than vampires and zompires. She makes a whole bunch of trouble for herself.

Review: The Haunting Season

Rating: 5 Stars *****
Source: Reviewer Purchase
Buy this book: The Haunting Season
Blurb: Be careful what you let in…
Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah’s moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess’s heart rate…when he’s not resurrecting the dead.
The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. In order to escape, Jess and the others will have to open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that has welcomed them all.

Lori's Review:
Jess and three other kids with paranormal-ness stay in the Siler house. Their presence wakes the house up and scary stuff happens.
This was my status update on the book last night. Yes, I was really freaked out.

Not kidding. At all. I was nail biting all night long. AND of course like an idiot I read this book at bedtime. It took me hours and LOTS of blasted tunes through the iPod to shut this story out of my head so I could sleep.

Short and Sweet Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Rating: 5 Stars *****
Source: Reviewer Purchase
Blurb: Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
Lori's Review:
Juliette can't touch people. Her skin is poison. Her touch kills. She has been put away and forgotten. Until Adam shows up. Her life drastically changes and she must choose to use her power in a way she never has before.
I loved the authors writing style, I thought it was beautiful. It's feels like poetry. It feels like sanity and insanity and Juliette's jumbled thoughts feel perfect.

Beyond the Books Blog Hop: My pastimes + Giveaway!

banner made by Frankie Rose

So I'm supposed to talk about my hobbies outside of books and blogging.... To be honest, I don't do anything that people would consider "hobbies". So I thought I would make a top ten list of things I like to do with my "spare time" (wtf is that?)

10.) Visit cemeteries. Really. I like them.
9.) Watch horrible reality TV like Duck Dynasty, Call of the Wild man and the Amish Mafia. I also scream at the TV when my  mom watches Finding Bigfoot. Those people give scientists a bad name. The purpose of science is NOT to prove something right, but to DISPROVE it.
8.) Listen to 80's music.

7.) Dream of becoming a famous Mexican banda and nortena singer. Sing songs about, and work for, the mafia and go down in a blaze of glory. Of course, having a child has tampered this dream. But I still spend a lot of time thinking about it.
6.) Sleeping. <-- that, my friends, is a real hobby.
5.) Search the Internet for the grossest things ever. I usually use words like skin, disease, warts.....
4.)Make Apocalypse plans. I think I may have to become some sort of pimp/drug/ arms dealer to ensure survival.
3.) Brush up on current events in the Native American community.
2.)Play with my daughter and nephew. I recently taught them ring around the poesy. I then told the older kids it was a song about the black death and did google searches of the plague to gross them out.
1.) Make Tacos.

Ok so I was going to talk you through some Taco recipes but yeah I suck at writing recipes so instead I'll just post pictures.

Taco pizza from Casey's. I made this one.
Mexican toppings...kinda I got lazy and didn't make my own pico. Plus there are no limes.
American toppings.
American tacos-ground beef and traditional toppings like sour cream, lettuce, cheese and tomatos.

Mexican tacos-the american way. Pork cut into strip and pan fried. Most mexicans don't put cheddar cheese or sour cream on their tacos. They do use pico de gaello and limes.

Review: Find you in the Dark by A. Meredith Walters

*Note this book is very clearly NEW ADULT and should not be read by anyone under 18. Or at least a VERY MATURE 16.

Rating: 4 Stars****
Blurb: Maggie Young had the market on normal. Normal friends, normal parents, normal grades...normal life.
Until him.
Clayton Reed was running from his past and an army of personal demons that threatened to take him down. He never thought he had a chance at happiness.
Until her.
Maggie thought their love could overcome anything. Clay thought she was all he needed to fix his messy life.
That together, they could face the world.
But the darkness is always waiting.
Sometimes the greatest obstacle to true love is within yourself.

Lori's Review:
Maggie May Young is a normal girl. Until she meets Clayton Reed. He brings out the crazy in Maggie. She falls head over heels for him. She completely loses herself in her love for him. She loves him despite his darkness.

Review and Interview: Echoes of Winter by Dominique Goodall

Source: ebook provided for review
Rating: 4 stars ****

Blurb: A wolf. A destiny. And only one war to stand in his way.
When Convel leaves his birth pack, he didn’t expect to end up in a war against cougars. As he gathers his strength about him as well as new pack-mates, he is also confronted by Humans – once believed to be mostly dead.
He isn’t alone in his endeavours. He doesn’t know it, but Singer and her rag-tag ‘pack’ are racing towards him for the climax in his life so far. With Sage, the elderly lynx, helping to guide him, will he be successful or will the traitor in his life get what they want?

Lori's Review:

This book follows Convel and Singer. Both Alpha wolves who have left their home packs for various and not so great reasons. Both are on a separate path that will lead them to their destinies. Both are strong, smart and willing to think outside of the box. That is where their similarities end. The cougars are a threat to the wolves lives and they are lead by a cruel leader. It is up to the wolves to stop them. Not just for their own good but for the good of the land.

Ok so two of my favorite books of all time are Call of the Wild and Watership Down. So I was super excited when I read the first few lines of this book and realized I was reading an epic tale from a wolves POV. Not an werewolf. A wolf. Period. I really love animals and I love learning about them. Even if what I am learning is fiction. I also love apex predators.

Review: Losing It by Cora Carmack

Stars: 3.5 *** for the actual book 5 stars for giving me a break from real life. :D
Source: reviewer purchase
Genre: New Adult
Buy this book:Losing It

Blurb: Virginity.
Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.
Lori's review:
"Sex.
I was going to have sex.
With a boy.
With a hot boy.
With a hot BRITISH boy.
Or Maybe I was going to throw up.
What if I threw up on the hot British boy?
What if I threw up on the hot British boy DURING sex? "

She is one player in a dangerous love triangle, unsure whether Jay is her saviour, or her nemesis. As her world falls apart, she must choose between the woman she thought she was, and the woman she has become.

Lori's Review:
Isobel Roberts leads a posh life devoid of passion. This lack of passion is suddenly becomes her sole focus after she meets Jay by chance. Months unfold before the two are reunited and able to explore her feelings.
I could not justifiably give this book anything less than four stars. It was well written, the pacing was flawless and I did manage to lose myself in it.

Review: Henrietta The Dragon Slayer by Beth Barany

Henrietta The Dragon Slayer
Henrietta The Dragon Slayer
by Beth Barany
Henrietta, the legendary Dragon Slayer of the Kingdom of Bleuve, can't stomach the thought of one more kill. Yet, in order to save her dying mentor, she must go on one last quest. But will misfit companions, seasickness, and an ego maniacal king derail the quest for the healing stone? And will she be able to cut past her conscience and kill the dragon?

Synopsis from Goodreads

This book was fun. No doubt about it. And I can definitely get behind a strong female lead, which Henrietta is. I'm just not sure if I like her much. Actually, none of the characters were overly likeable. Their mood swings were confusing, and so were their actions. They did begin to grow on me, but it took a long time to get there.

The book, to me, felt like it was half formed. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful vision. It just needed to go a little further. For example, I wanted to know more about why Henrietta was no longer slaying dragons. How did she get to this point?? Some terrible thing is hinted at a few times, but never developed. I NEED TO KNOW!

I may be nit picking a little (or a lot), but Henrietta's stomach bothered me. She was constantly having indigestion, to the point that I wondered if someone was poisoning her. Was this an abandoned plot point or just a limited way of saying that she was anxious?

Now, on to the plus side. The action scenes were great! Fight scenes are hard to write well, but Barany has done just that. I can easily visualize Henrietta's slicing and dicing. Love it.

Also, I feel the need to give kudos to the editing. I have, in the past, had a hard time reading indie books when the copy editing has been skipped. I am pleased to announce that the typos in the book probably numbered less than 20. No, I wasn't counting. But it was an obvious difference that it made to the overall flow.

Just out of curiosity, will there be another book, do you think? It is subtitled The Five Kingdoms #1, which hints that there will be other books, possibly about the other kingdoms. But since this was published a year and a half ago, with no #2 in sight, I tend to be a little skeptical about seeing the rest of the series. I do hope that Barany gets to it. Otherwise, I will have to go to my grave wondering what ended Henrietta's long and healthy career of dragon slaying.

Overall, I would recommend this book. It should have been longer, to allow the characters the time they needed to develop, and the plot the time it needed to fill out. But in the end, it was a good teen read, and I can imagine many a young girl wishing they were Henrietta, the Dragon Slayer.

Fang Girl Promo Blitz, Guest Post and Giveaway!

Fang Girl by Helen Keeble - September 11th 2012 / HarperTeen

Things That Are Destroying Jane Greene’s Undead Social Life Before It Can Even Begin:
1) A twelve-year-old brother who’s convinced she’s a zombie.

2) Parents who are begging her to turn them into vampire.

3) The pet goldfish she accidentally turns instead.

4) Weird superpowers that let her rip the heads off of every other vampire she meets.(Sounds cool, but it doesn’t win you many friends.

5) A pyschotic vampire creator who’s using her to carry out a plan for world domination.

And finally:

6) A seriously ripped vampire hunter who either wants to stake her or make out with her. Not sure which.
Being an undead, eternally pasty fifteen-year-old isn’t quite the sexy, brooding, angst-fest Jane always imagined....Helen Keeble’s riotous debut novel combines the humor of Vladimir Tod with Ally Carter’s spot-on teen voice. With a one-of-a-kind vampire mythology and an irresistibly relatable undead heroine, this uproarious page-turner will leave readers bloodthirsty for more.

Three Things Vampires Don't Want You To Know
Guest Post by Helen Keeble

Vampires aren't real. If they were, they couldn't stay hidden for long, right? Thanks to the endless books, films, and TV shows filled with vampiric lore, we all know how to recognise a bloodsucker. And we all know their weaknesses - sunlight, beheading, fire, stakes, athletic teenage girls, holy water, garlic…

Or maybe that's just what the vampires want you to think are their weaknesses.

Delve a little deeper into traditional vampiric folklore, and there are a lot of weird things that don't appear in our modern vampire fiction. Things that maybe the vampires want to keep quiet…

A shout out to our beloved Lori

Lori my friend, we have been through a lot. Through all our ups and downs we have always come out on top. After the death of my mom you were always there to lend and ear or a shoulder whenever I needed it.

Even though we dont work together, or even live close to one another anymore I still consider you one of my best friends.

When Lori decided to start this blog, she invited me to help out. Although I have posted several reviews, without Lori this blog would not be what it is today. Lori goes out of her way everyday to bring something new and exciting to the blog. She works her ass off promoting Authors who sometimes fly just under the radar and are not as well known as they should be.

With Lori's smart, sarcastic, and twisted sense of humor she has made this blog flourish. I just wanted to say thank you for inviting me on this journey with you. Although sometimes I am unable to pull my weight you never get down on me about my moodswings. I love you bitch!

Zombie cheers to you Luv

Review: The Farm by Emily McKay

Rating: 5 Stars *****
Source: Reviewer purchase
Genre: YA Horror/Dystopian

Blurb:Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…
And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.
Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…
Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race....

Review:
Lily and Mel are twin sisters. They live on a "Farm". The farm is really a college campus that has been converted into an interrement camp for teenagers. They live secluded from everyone else. Choosing to stay in a storage closet in the science building rather than the dorms. Lily takes care of Mel because of her autism.  Everything goes smoothly they stay out of the Dean's notice and even have a plan to get out. Well, until Carter comes along and messes everything up.

This book was really, really good. It was dark and full of subtle horror. Living on the Farm was just as dangerous as living outside the Farm and facing the Ticks.

Clarity and Reason by Rue Volley

5 Stars ~ Kami's Review

*Contains some spoilers*

We start off this book with Jonathan's funeral. Rue is distraught and has basically cut everyone off. Josh is as always suffering the most from Rue's lack of attention. He is literally starving for her affection. This is one of those times that I just want to shake Rue.

This book was amazing! After the last book I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this blew me away!

With Josh being in possession of Jonathan's light, he took on some of Jonathan's characteristics. Reading these parts was funny as hell. The author does such a good job of writing that you feel very much a part of the story. I can clearly picture everything that the author is writing about. I don’t feel like I am watching from sidelines like I do with some books, I feel like I am right there experiencing everything the characters are, the good, the bad, and the hilarious.

I am however getting tired of Rue constantly skipping out of reality. Whether it’s to memory, or in this books case purgatory, it is annoying. She is so hell bent on having some kind of normal life that when she is sucked into an alternate reality she is all too ready for it to be real and forgets about everyone else who matters to her just so she can play "normal". She needs to grow up and accept who and what she is; otherwise she will never truly be happy.

Ladies and Gentlemen we have a Threesome!!! Yes you read that right, and it was HOT! Not erotica hot, but hot none the less. I wont say who, but you will not be dissappointed.

We find out that Jonathan has some demon in him thanks to Caine doing the nasty with a demon in possession of a human. This same demon is now trying to kill the Creator who is believed to have been born on the same night as Jonathan. Since Jonathan was never meant to be it created a ‘ripple’ of sorts enabling the Creator to be born into the world of the living.

I found this book to be a little confusing. With Rue constantly skipping in and out of reality it is hard sometimes to know if you are reading in real time or in some twisted version of life that Rue has conjured.  The end of the book was the most confusing for me. After Rue accepts that she must kill Jonathan, she has to go back in time and kill him when she first meets him in the Library. I don’t get why this has to happen. Anyway, after some more confusing reality trips we are brought back to the final battle part, same place, and the same people. In the end Jonathan is alive and okay. I don’t understand this at all.

The Author has come a long way since the first book, less grammatical errors and just better writing in general. This is a highly addictive series and I recommend it to everyone.

Ch-ch-ch-CHANGES!!!!

I've been circling around the drain. Mentally at least. My confidence as a blogger is at an all time low. My reviews are coming fewer and fewer as my list of books to read becomes bigger and bigger. The thing is: I feel like I am reading all the time. But there is nothing to show for it. It's taking me longer and longer to finish books and longer to write reviews. So I think as the new year quickly approaches I am going to make some changes around here.

The first change which has already been implemented is that I am no longer accepting review requests. I am still accepting beta requests and will review my beta projects if the author wants me to. However, I have managed to get myself into quite the pickle with the amount of books I have said "yes" to reviewing. The current stack of review books will probably take me 3 months to complete. Just because I am not reading very many books a week right now. I will review all the books that I have accepted to this point.

Have no fear indie writers. I still accept requests from Parajunkee. If you would like me to review your book on her site please request it through her form.

The second change I am making is that I will not be signing up for as many book tours. My hope is to bring the blog back to a more reader based blog than a giveaway blog. The less time I spend fussing over the format and look of these simple posts (seriously takes me so long to get everything looking decent) the more time I spend reading and  the more reviews I can put up. I will continue to do promotional spots but not nearly as many. Giveaways will not be going away. Trust me. I love giving stuff away. However, I just have more fun writing reviews than cutting and pasting info into a post. What can I say? I like ramble on and on!

Ok so I have a friend who has been telling me about this book written by Tfc Parks (aka Brandie Buckwine) called Rhythm in Blue. I was always interested but never had the time. But better yet. There is on ecopy of this book up for grabs!!!

Unfortunately, escape is short lived when a Russian ballistic submarine rescues them and a computer malfunction threatens an all-out nuclear attack on North America. Time is running out and the sub’s programmer cannot stop the computer failure. It is up to the teens to convince the Russians they should be allowed to give it a try.

Tick tock.

Her first novel was written in pencil, stapled together and placed in the school library. At age 6, she didn’t have a clue an author needed a publisher. She has a passion for the written word and assisting other writers in becoming the best they can be. She also loves to promote others and cheer them on to victory.
